Blackbird did the site master plan and design for the renovation of an Edward Durell Stone museum in Worcester, MA. As an education center geared toward hands-on exploration and discovery of nature, the design sought to reconnect visitors to the site. The building was transformed by replacing a 60’x40’ concrete wall with glass, creating inviting indoor space and dramatically reorienting visitors toward the surrounding vista of nature and its seasons.
New educational spaces such as an orientation theater-in-the-round and telecom theater/classroom incorporate movable walls to allow layout to change at will. Outdoor areas emphasize connections to natural features, and sustainably designed parking and infrastructure elements are displayed and interpreted as an educational opportunity.
