Our client requested a serene space as a retreat, with spaces for entertaining and relaxing, as part of the renovation and expansion of this historic cottage in Montecito. The old-growth Coastal Live Oaks established the character of this tranquil place. Meandering paths of flagstone and shale connect six outdoor rooms, including a Chinese-inspired gazebo, a fully furnished outdoor kitchen with a stone slab table, a natural meadow, and a Balinese pavilion complete with daybed and white curtains for daydreaming by the pond.
A series of natural-appearing water features organize the garden from north to south. Beginning with a series of recirculating waterfalls and ponds winding around and along the studio, gazebo, and main house, to terminate at a pond with a Balinese pavilion floating above. From there, it becomes a bio-swale with native plants chosen to make it appear to be a perennial creek.
